40-Hour RBT Training Course: What's Actually in It
A 40-hour RBT training course is the mandatory training every RBT applicant must complete before their competency assessment and certification application, built from a curriculum the BACB publishes and updates. It runs a fixed 38 hours across eight sections, plus 2 hours a trainer can add wherever the group needs more time, delivered in person or online, in no fewer than 5 days and no more than 180 days. The BACB doesn’t run this training itself; employers, universities, and independent online providers do.
Most people choosing a course get stuck comparing price and format (self-paced online versus a scheduled live cohort) without checking whether the content actually meets the current curriculum. That distinction matters more since January 1, 2026: applicants now need a training built to the updated 2026 curriculum outline, and a course still teaching the older structure won’t be accepted even if it’s technically 40 hours long.

What are the eight required sections, and how much time does each get?
Behavior-Change Interventions dominates at half the total training time. Everything else fits around it:

Sections can be taught in any order, so a course that covers Behavior-Change Interventions before the ABA introduction isn’t cutting corners, it’s just sequenced differently.
Who’s actually allowed to teach it?
A “Responsible Trainer,” meaning an actively certified BCaBA, BCBA, or BCBA-D who has separately completed the BACB’s own 8-hour supervision training. That person can delegate parts of the training to an “Assistant Trainer” who already holds RBT certification or higher, but the Responsible Trainer stays accountable for the whole course meeting requirements, and neither trainer can be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the trainee taking the course.
Does the training have to include more than watching videos?
Yes. The BACB specifically requires “behavioral skills training” components, meaning some combination of modeling with exemplars and nonexemplars, in-vivo or video role-play with feedback, content quizzes, interactive activities, or instructor-led discussion, not just passive video-watching. Assigned readings alone don’t count toward the 40-hour total, even if the reading list is genuinely thorough.
How much does the training actually cost?
Anywhere from free to roughly $120, entirely set by the provider, not the BACB. Autism Partnership Foundation runs a free, publicly available course; paid providers we checked in 2026 include ATCC (as low as $39 for a 1-week pace or $119 for a 1-month pace), Behavior University (starting at $79), AppleTree Connection ($97), and Florida Tech’s RBT Essentials program ($90).

A free course isn’t automatically a worse one, and a $120 course isn’t automatically better, but whatever you pick, confirm directly with the provider that it’s built to the 2026 curriculum outline before you rely on the certificate. This part of the RBT certification cost is the one variable the BACB doesn’t control at all.
What has to be on your training certificate?
Your name and BACB ID, the training’s start and end dates, the total time you spent in training, the Responsible Trainer’s name and certification number, and a required statement that the program is designed to meet the 2026 eligibility requirement and is offered independent of the BACB. Missing any of these fields can hold up your RBT certification application at the review stage, since the BACB checks the certificate against these specific requirements.
What comes right after the training finishes?
Your RBT competency assessment, which has to happen after training completion and within 90 days of your application, watched by a qualifying assessor who isn’t your trainer, employer, or relative. It’s worth lining up that assessor before your last training hour, not after, since scheduling them can eat into that 90-day window faster than people expect.
